‘Rainbow’ once again strikes to the core, tackling the notion of race and identity, in what is now trademark slowthai fashion. Sharp, astute and direct, slowthai has become a voice for his generation with a flow that is instantly recognisable and lyrics that unfailingly challenge his listeners. ‘Not white, but not black either’ raps slowthai on the string laden beat as he trades ideas of what race is, what race means and how it’s used as a weapon in which to stereotype and enslave. The supporting visual sees slowthai as King Kong – the giant ape abducted to perform for people who manages to escape but is then shot and killed. The story exemplifies the parallel of the song’s lyrics; oppression, control and although in this instance the breaking free of those shackles can end up leading to an even worse fate, it’s a struggle that should always be heeded.

‘Rainbow’ follows on from his critically acclaimed recent EP ‘RUNT’ which featured stand out track ‘Drug Dealer’, and sees slowthai effortlessly tread the line between grime, rap and garage, in an unmistakeably British fashion. His lyrics cut through with a rawness and unflinching honesty, that has the listener hanging on every word and has seen radio tastemakers Annie Mac, Gilles Peterson, Zane Lowe and Benji B all jump on board.
With a debut LP set for early next year, slowthai has become the artist to watch in 2018.
