SALFORD FESTIVAL CELEBRATES ITS QUINDECENNIAL EVENT ON SUNDAY 5TH MAY 2019
Sounds From The Other City Festival has been a firm underground favourite since 2004; championing local promoters and celebrating the off-kilter beauty of Salford, the oft-overlooked ‘other city’ to Manchester.
A genuine DIY success story – the past five years have each sold out – this year marks its fifteenth anniversary and, on Sunday 5th May 2019, they’re set to celebrate in unique style with their first Quindecennial.
Today, it announces the full line up, including Black Midi (“the most talked about new band in the country” – DIY; “your favorite band’s new favorite band” – Pitchfork); the SFTOC return of indie-pop royalty The Orielles; Belgian punks Cocaine Piss; Bristol noise-rockers Spectres; the blissed-out grooves of Manchester’s Ménage à Trois; Edinburgh DIY folk-rock troubadour Withered Hand; laid-back rap maestro Barney Artist; and the Sounds debut of Factory Floor co-founder Gabe Gurnsey (“unfailingly relentless” – The Guardian).
SFTOC also welcomes the BBC Philharmonic for a special commission, this time to collaborate with recent favourites Young Identity. Combining the power of the spoken word performance with the magisterial energy of an orchestral ensemble, this one-off meeting of minds is certain to go down in Sounds lore.
For the Quindecennial, SFTOC asked 15 of its favourite promoters to pick two acts, to be presented across 5 stages. In the mix are perennial greats Now Wave, Hey! Manchester, and Grey Lantern, exciting new blood in Partisan (the collective and volunteer run space for independent, community led, DIY and cultural based projects), and a big link up with Bluedot (who will be making their SFTOC debut).
2018 saw the biggest and best SFTOC to date. This year will see all that action packed into one site, as 1500 people descend on Salford’s Regent Trading Estate. Sunday 5th May will be filled with the special touches fans won’t find anywhere else, with art direction from ALL five art directors from the past five years. As day turns to night, they will be the usual array of legendary after-parties at both the Pint Pot and across all 4 floors at new venue YES with a one-off collab between So Flute x High Hoops, everyone’s favourite basement dance party, Kiss Me Again, newcomers Me Gusta, the return of the Thirsty Girls and mega vibes from Regal Disco.
