Today March 31st, Polydor Records release Charlotte OC’s debut album, Careless People. The young U.K. artist recorded the album at Hollywood’s legendary Sunset Sound with producer/former Ima Robot member Tim Anderson (Solange, Youngblood Hawke, Halsey). See below for track listing.
‘The album is a collection of songs that tells the story of how other people’s recklessness and careless behaviour can hurt and affect others. It’s also about me being careless and moments where I probably should have cared less, also finding out what i actually cared about.’
Charlotte performed the album’s lead single, “Darkest Hour,” for her US television debut on Late Night with Seth Meyers on February 15th. The track, which already has more than 700,000 streams, is one of 10 originals on Careless People. “Darkest Hour” is available HERE. The FADER hailed the accompanying video as “striking” and noted, “Charlotte gives her all to her performance. As the anthemic song continues, the key lines of the power chorus, the devil he waits, the devil he waits for you, seem more like reality and less like metaphor.” The Line of Best Fit observed, “The brilliance of the song lies in its contrasts; spacious, piano-led verses giving way to the towering vocals of the chorus. Lyrically, it’s every part the soulful sorcery we’ve come to expect from this rising star.”
Throughout Careless People, Charlotte matches the stormy intensity of her music with fearlessly intimate lyrics. With its title taken from a passage in The Great Gatsby (“They were careless people, Tom and Daisy—they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness”), the album closely explores her own fascination with careless behavior.
“I wrote a lot about family problems, things I grew up with that have stayed with me through my life—but also about falling in love for the first time and everything that comes with that,” says Charlotte OC, who grew up in the former mill town of Blackburn.
The stark, darkly romantic album was inspired by her homeland. “The North of England is quite gloomy and industrial, but there’s also all this folklore about the North that’s got a lot to do with witches,” explains Charlotte. “Making this album, I wanted to mix the real and surreal in that way, to be as honest as possible but also bring out the mystical side of where I’m from.”
On the slow burning “Blackout,” Charlotte laces intense beats and dusky guitar lines through lyrics examining the isolation of anxiety and the beauty of breaking free. Other tracks are instilled with unfettered joy. Driven by heavy beats and ethereal effects, the stripped-back and seductive “Medicine Man” perfectly captures the dizzy thrill of falling head over heels. Meanwhile, on the R&B-tinged “Running Back to You,” silken grooves and stirring harmonies meet in a bittersweet portrait of the constant longing that comes with long-distance love.
Careless People follows her acclaimed breakout EP, Colour My Heart. SPIN praised how Charlotte “channels the bewitching allure of Stevie Nicks and the big-throated finesse of Alicia Keys.” NYLON said, “It’s only a matter of time before you get hooked on this U.K. singer and songwriter’s gorgeous sound.” Charlotte has also developed a reputation as a formidable live performer, delivering highly praised performances on tour throughout the UK and Australia and in the US at SXSW and Governors Ball.
