Today, Subculture is back with his new single ‘Gunning For Fees’ feat. Grand Pax and Goya Gumbani on Twisted Hearts Records (Tertia May, TINYMAN). This is hot on the heels of his recent single ‘The River Bend’ feat. Rachel Chinouriri [listen] which has spent two weeks on the Rinse FM A-list as well as spins from DJ Target and Jamz Supernova on 1XTRA, Julie Adenuga on Beats1 and Huw Stephens on Radio 1.

‘Gunning For Fees’ has a space-dub / future Hip-Hop groove and features Subculture’s hallmark night-time, after-party aesthetic which is brought together perfectly by Grand Pax’s haunting vocal and Goya Gumbani’s soulful, laid-back bars.

“This song came about from me trying to get two of my favourite artists from very different worlds in the same room together. Goya’s a left-field Brooklyn alternative hip hop artist who kinda reminds me of Earl Sweatshirt and Nas. Grand Pax makes this beautiful lo-fi indie and same as me she pretty much grew up in Camden. I find her such an interesting artist and really love all her music. Putting the two of them on a track together is 100% my bag. People from different worlds gotta come together more often, that’s how real magic happens”

As an artist, Hip Hop is central to Subculture’s sound, but he also draws influence from Post-Punk and Jazz. Having had to move his studio several times in the last year, Subculture coined his method as ‘nomadic production’. Drawing on the culture of hospitality central to his middle Eastern/North African roots, no matter where Subculture sets up shop he puts maximum focus on creating a welcoming environment for his collaborators, allowing him to develop productive working relationships with the likes of Chelou, Grand Pax, Goya Gumbani and Tertia May.

‘Gunning For Fees’ is the second single from Subculture this year, as he opens his treasure trove of material, further ramping up the heat.
