Suede Lost In TV DVD

‘You know more of their songs than you think’ – tagline for a ‘Greatest Hits’ by a ‘80’s AOR piglets Crowded House. Suede’s marketing department must be giving that phrase a bit of indie polish right now. Reading the track listing on this DVD is an exercise in recovered memory syndrome, as the titles bring the images flooding back… Brett Anderson managing to be a foppish, rock’n’roll, dandy when Brit-pop was a mere twinkle in Alan McGee’s eye; bemused Top 40 DJ’s gibbering over whether ‘Animal Nitrate’ was a reference to amyl nitrate. Further speculation regarding the non-prescription/self medicating uses of said chemical merely led to even darker glimpses of a mind-stopping sexual ambivalence not seen since the days of Bowie and Bolan…‘cause Suede were gonna change the world y’know.

Even jaded pop memories should remember ‘She’s in Fashion’ or even the ‘standing-in-a-field-looking-moody’ promo for ‘Beautiful Ones’, however, who among you can sing along with lesser known gems such as ‘Metal Mickey’ or ‘The Drowners’? Rare footage is all very well but Suede are a band who don’t particularly like doing videos For your chance at the indie version of Popstars use the bizarre sing-a-long-a Suede karaoke function, that was a an actual feature of early fan club concerts, where potential for Morecambe & Wise/André Previn style japes must surely be a hideous wasted opportunity – ‘Bernard, you’re playing all the wrong notes…’ etc.

If you are too weary to even criticise the videos then Suede have kindly stepped into the breach with their own sullen, sulky comments on the videos they hate, which is most of them. 7.8/10
