SURFER BLOOD DEBUT “I CAN’T EXPLAIN”

TODAY VIA CONSEQUENCE OF SOUND

“One of the moodier entries in the Surfer Blood catalog. Pitts sings with restraint atop dreamy layers of guitar and tom-heavy drums. The band revels in the ethereal aesthetic, creating a lush and blissful atmosphere.” – Consequence of Sound

Today Surfer Blood debut I Can’t Explain, the latest track off its highly anticipated new album 1000 Palms, (due out May 12 on Joyful Noise) along with upcoming tour dates including multiple appearances at SXSW (see below for full schedule).
Premiering today exclusively via Consequence of Sound, I Can’t Explain offers fans a third taste of the band’s new album (following previously revealed album tracks Dorianand Grand Inquisitor). The track will be available as a digital instant-grat immediate download with album pre-order, and as a limited-edition 7” ft. an exclusive B-Side of Surfer Blood covering The Verlaines’ 1983 track Death & The Maiden.

“I Can’t Explain is one of our most collaborative efforts to date,” explains Surfer Blood’s John Paul Pitts. “The hook just came to us one day in the practice space and we wrote the rest of the song around it.  The lyrics (by Kevin Williams) tell the story of a romantic encounter on a New Year’s Eve past and build slowly with the rest of the song.  I’ve always been keen on a long instrumental outro, so this seemed like the perfect spot for a long, jammy guitar section – a place for us to get some Yo La Tengo/Built to Spill guitar fetishizing out of our system.”
1000 Palms, Surfer Blood’s third full-length and first release with acclaimed indie imprint Joyful Noise marks a return to the band’s DIY ethos. Abandoning the big time studio, the band decided to head back home to self-record and self-produce their third album. Free of major-label-influence, Surfer Blood has delivered a uniquely compelling album, unlike anything in their catalog.
