Dying 4, the solo project of Blue Bendy guitarist Joseph Nash, shares the final preview of his debut EP ‘Perish Songs’ which comes out on Friday, 4 September. The final single to be lifted from the EP is ‘Sweetheart Grips’ ft. TaliaBle which takes his unique sound into a distinct new space with the urgency and drama of her rapping. The whole project is one that mirrors Nash’s upbringing in Scunthorpe sonically before distorting them beyond recognition, turning nostalgia into a vehicle for experimentation and genre dissolution.
Nash explains that “The track is about being so infatuated with someone, it makes the thought of doing terrible things seem easy or trivial. I read what sweetheart grips were online, it’s sort of romantic in a warped, unsettling way.
“I’ve been a massive fan of TaliaBle since hearing the track Pandora’z Spit. The delivery on every word she raps is so gripping and urgent. It’s been a lot of fun working together and shooting the video on the roof of her studio.”
Drawing on the sounds that surrounded him growing up in Scunthorpe, alongside a guitar style developed through years of playing in bands, as Dying 4, Nash pulls from a broad church of influences that reflects the subcultures that shaped him.
That tension sits at the heart of Dying 4. The project channels nostalgia for conflicting youth sub-cultures and the worlds they built around themselves, while rejecting straightforward revivalism. Bubblegum pop bristles against glitches and discord, fingerpicked guitar motifs drift through walls of distortion, and club music influences intertwine with indie songwriting instincts.
Every Dying 4 composition begins with the electric guitar and, other than drums and vocals, that’s all that remains. After years spent experimenting with production techniques and becoming overwhelmed by the endless possibilities of software instruments and sound design tools, Nash found a breakthrough by limiting himself to the instrument he knew best and reshaping it entirely within his laptop.
Outside of Dying 4, Nash is best known as a guitarist in acclaimed six-piece experimental rock outfit Blue Bendy, a band praised by Pitchfork, The Guardian and The Quietus for their ability to defy expectations and shift effortlessly between genres. That same spirit of unpredictability runs through Dying 4, where Nash pushes his collage-like approach even further. With Perish Songs, and its opening statement ‘Strafe’, he introduces a project that finds unity in contradiction and turns subcultural friction into creative fuel.
