The Cool Greenhouse’s new single “Life Advice”, the second from their forthcoming debut, is a quip-tastic jab at the kind of pithy, cure-all aphorisms that you find in your useless self-help books or scribble into the margins of your boring diary, and with which the kids seem to have developed an unhealthy infatuation these days. In it, you receive a number of such wisdoms from strange sources (a knitted bat, a poncho’d hippie, a chain-smoking gran), attempt to put them into action and inevitably come unstuck. With puns. But it’s ok—that fad was stupid anyway and now you can be done with it. Broadening their horizons to three chords (compare recent single “The Sticks”’s mere two) and even including a chorus plus a guitar solo that doesn’t make any sense, Life Advice is the closest thing you’ll get to a catchy pop number that doesn’t stray too far from The Cool Greenhouse’s signature wobbly, repetitious-delicious signature sound.

Lifted from the groups self-titled album, which was produced and mixed by Phil Booth over a week at an old potato-packing warehouse outside Nottingham, the record is a much-needed punch in the gut against the gammon classes, rural conservatism and a host of other late-capitalist absurdities with razor-sharp wit along the way.
