The Emperors of Wyoming are a quartet of highly experienced and very talented fellas; Phil Davis, Butch Vig, Franklin Lee, and Peter Anderson. The Anderson brothers were in Call Me Bwana while Davis and Vig helped form Fire Town in the late 80’s. Vig then goes on to produce some of the most celebrated albums ever including Nirvana’s ‘Nevermind’ and helping to create Garbage. So with that sort of pedigree you would expect something spectacular and the Emperors really do live up to this.
Their eponymous debut album (set for release on 17thSeptember) is an incredible achievement, especially considering they never made it once into a single recording studio together. It was all done via email from their own personal studios, a crazy idea, but it works beautifully and the result is a deep, soulful, sensual country rock album with heavy undertones and a light sprinkling of folksy high lights.
The lyrics are soulful and the instrumentals are sweetly melancholic and filled with heart, heat, and longing. This is a wonderfully emotive album from start to finish that has a truly classic sound while avoiding the pitfall of sounding dated. 8/10
