NEW YORK, NY (August 1, 2011) – Rolling Stone announced today that The Sheepdogs are the winners of the magazine’s first-ever “Do You Wanna Be A Rock & Roll Star?” competition, as chosen by consumer votes. The Canadian quartet from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, will be the first band or artist not signed with a major label to be on the cover of Rolling Stone. Along with appearing on the August 18th issue, (on newsstands August 5th), The Sheepdogs will receive a recording deal with Atlantic Records and will perform on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon on August 2nd.
The Sheepdogs beat out 15 other finalists through four rounds of voting, including a head-to-head performance at Bonnaroo versus fellow two-top finalist, Lelia Broussard. Band members Ewan Currie, Ryan Gullen, San Corbett and Leot Hanson formed The Sheepdogs in 2006 and have toured across North America along with releasing three independent albums. On August 2nd, the Sheepdogs will be releasing a digital EP, “Five Easy Pieces,” and Broussard will release “Wolves Are At My Door,” also a digital EP.
Launched in February, the competition started with 16 acts selected by Rolling Stone, AOL Music editors and Atlantic A&R executives. During the competition, The Sheepdogs and other finalists travelled to New York City to record and perform songs for Rolling Stone editors, Atlantic A&R executives and other industry professionals, including Kid Rock, Lady Antebellum, and Fall Out Boy’s Patrick Stump. The final three rounds of voting were made solely by consumers, garnering thousands of votes.
To celebrate The Sheepdogs’ historic win, Rolling Stone will be hosting a fete at NYC’s Empire Hotel on August 3rd with music by DJ Paul Sevigny. The event will benefit Music Unites, an organization dedicated to bringing music education to underprivileged children in underfunded inner city school systems.
