The Terraces – ‘Extra Time’ EP

From the off the ‘Extra Time’ EP bears witness to a more evolved overall sound, there is at least the impression that things have took a step forward; end result being a more rounded, even comfortable bright punk. The Terraces are fronted by ex-One Way System and Horse (London) stalwart Gary Buckley with Rose Tattoo’s Stephen ‘Kingy’ King on bass,  Dean Tsolondres on guitar and Shakir Pichler on drums, the ‘Extra Time’ EP which is being released to coincide with their UK tour with Electric River in August

Opening track ‘Britannia’ is robust, by the chords punk that’s a nostalgic sounding, empire-breaking romp. ‘Who You looking At’ posseses 1977 inspired guitar dynamics and vocal, married with added hook friendly chorus, it’s tight, well played if slightly functional. Whereas ‘Billy’ hits the right balance, a strong track. Then it’s ‘Complete Control’ a worthy and worthwhile rendition, played bar to bar with passion and commitment, yeah, but there’s still a but with this tribute – it’s a cover and as such pales against the original. The Terraces have released a brand new video of  ‘Complete Control’ which features a very special appearance by The Clash’s Nick Sheppard, so better enjoy for yourselves below. Back to the new EP, the new 2013 version of I Don’t Care about Nothing sounds very good although the ordinal sounded cracking anyway, the EP version is sharper, packing more of a left cross. Track 6, ‘The Hustler’ has a more streamlined appeal it seams a snap to the end of proceedings.

Opinion at WithGuitars has not wavered since we enjoyed their Newcastle December show  of 2012, if anything the Antipodean band have introduced a few new tricks to the ‘Extra Time’ EP, although part of me would be happy to see them detail more of the crap which happening in this decade, but for now at least where they are is no bad place to be. 7.5/10
