New Album Half Light Out Now
Today, Manchester drone duo Thraa release their new album Half Light via Into Earth. Featuring recently released singles ‘Contre-Courant’ and ‘Into The Blue’, Half Light offers the next phase of Andi and Sally’s exploration into big dynamics, distorted tonal colouring and heavenly vocals.
With themes of water and landscape running throughout the record, the duo captured the monolithic resonance of their live setting. Half Light was self-produced by the band and cut in three days at 4AD Studios. It was mastered by Sarah Register and its artwork features a collaboration between legends Chris Bigg and Nigel Grierson.
The band celebrate the release their new album after a series of UK shows supporting Ufomammut, Topographies, and Japanese psych/noise band Barbican Estate. They continue next month with further shows supporting Bonnocans of Doom and Smote and as well as a Salford album launch with Obey Cobra and Dextro – the full list of tour dates is included below and information and tickets can be found HERE. After playing for many years as part of bigger bands, Andi & Sally of Thraa explore what it would be like to take instruments away, leaving two guitars and one vocal. Working without the constrictions of a traditionally structured song, this duo improvise around meditative drones, combining Sunn 0))) and Body/Head influenced guitars with soaring vocals, capturing an organic sense of sound that has cavernous textures with minimalism at heart.
“There’s something about drone that seems to really suit duos. Earth, SUNN O))), OM, Nadja… The list goes on. And now we can add Thraa to the mighty canon. While you could be fooled into thinking the tracks are meticulously notated compositions of heavy minimalism, their slowly unwinding, Sisyphean meditations are in fact recorded as single-take improvisations. Their pieces will echo through your bones like the roar of a distant giant in a mythical valley and provide the warmth of a freshly flayed sheep’s skin. It’s as if Kim Gordon has swapped her designer sparkles for a cockroach-black hoodie and signed to the Southern Lord label.”
