Today sees the anticipated release of a captivating debut mixtape from Manchester singer, songwriter and producer, Clara La San. Written and recorded entirely in her bedroom, ‘Good Mourning’ features additional production from Night Slugs affiliate Jam City.
Since the release of singles ‘Feel Good’ and ‘Gravity’ Clara has gained the support of tastemakers such as FADER, DAZED and Hunger TV as well as BBC Radio 1 and 6 presenters; Phil Taggart, Jamz Supernova and Gilles Peterson.
“I use music to help me understand situations. I write for myself and if there’s nothing for me to say, I won’t write at all.”
Although this is Clara’s first formal project, she has been hotly tipped as one to watch for some time. Her credibility and talent is easily traced back to 2014 when her first SoundCloud upload, ‘Let You Go’, caused waves across the Internet, clocking up over 200,000 plays. Attention continued to grow as she dropped more tracks winning fans worldwide. Notably including London producer Mssngno who she went on to collaborate with on his 2016 ‘Fones’ EP released by XL Recordings.
At eleven tracks long, ‘Good Mourning’ is a sonic diary, written as a way of interpreting life’s ups and downs, often in heartbreaking detail and recorded when emotions are still raw. From opener ‘Rivers’ through to the ethereal ‘Gravity’, Clara bares all whilst never losing composure. ‘Feel Good’ is a woozy and atmospheric earworm, and the widescreen ‘Strangers’ belongs on soundtracks with its crunchy pads and effervescent synths.
With a unique sound that feels deeply intimate yet stunningly cinematic, Clara La San’s debut release paints an intriguing picture of an artist to pay close attention to in 2018.
