(March 2, 2015 – Toronto, ON) Toronto-based roots-rock darlings, The Young Novelists are proud to announce that their sophomore album made us strangers will be independently released on April 28, 2015 in Canada. The album is now available for pre-order through the band’s PledgeMusic page. To get a little taste of what to expect on the band’s latest LP, check out the lead track “brothers in the garage” premiering now via Exclaim!
Heralded as “one of the top folk bands to watch in Toronto”, The Young Novelists have been taking the folk world by storm. In their short five years together, the band has picked up a Galaxie Rising Star Award, two nominations for the Colleen Peterson songwriting award and earned a multitude of praise for their debut EP, live album and their thoughtful and heartfelt first full-length record in the year you were born. Whether touring as a duo comprised of vocalist/guitarist Graydon James and vocalist/percussionist Laura Spink or as a full band, the Young Novelists’ catchy, beautifully-crafted songs and impeccably stacked harmonies have garnered the attention of fans from coast to coast.
On their latest effort, the twelve tracks that make up made us strangers, showcase a significant sonic progression for the band. “We were looking to inject a bit of excitement and edginess into it this time around,” mentions James, “but we also wanted the recordings to be more organic and true.” To accomplish this, The Young Novelists enlisted the aid of producer Carlin Nicholson (Zeus, Jason Collett, The Golden Dogs). Together, with a minimalist approach to recording – no pitch correction, no click tracks, and some cuts captured entirely live off the floor – they added some grit to The Young Novelists’ sonic grace.
Lyrically, the record hinges on interpersonal relationships, which includes both traditional and non-traditional ones – from brothers in a band to a torrid love triangle to a new father missing the sound of his son’s voice when they’re apart.
As a published author with one novel – The Mall of Small Frustrations – to his name and two others in the works, James’ words carry a weight and depth that demands repeat listens. The hope, he says, is having a listener connect with the sentiment he explores, if not the specific subjects. “As personal as the songs are,” he offers, “I hope they’re connecting to other people in a way that goes beyond the situations I was writing about.”
The Young Novelists have just announced an extensive North American tour in support of made us strangers. The tour, which kicks off on March 13th in Illinois, features stops in 10 Canadian cities, including a special album release party in Toronto on May 22 at Little Trinity Church.
