On may 1st Chicago based metal powerhouse Trials will unleash their second album In the Shadows of Swords. Blending a style of twenty first century metalcore with traditional thrash Trials have a groove as well as style that is infectious.
Nine original tracks followed up by a cover of Judas Priests Jawbreaker is enough to get any metal heads motor running but when they are produced well and delivered superbly it feels like this metal heads engine is going to explode. Bands come and bands go but only few make a great impact. Trials seem to be one of the few.
A classic metal feel runs through out this album whilst incorporating aspects of the new hardcore wave that is currently popular whilst not sounding stale in anyway. Trials fall somewhere between the style of Killswitch Engage and Slayer which in itself is a very broad spectrum but there is no pigeon holing Trials.
In the Shadows of Swords has everything that a good metal album needs to be an immediate success. Catchy riffs, a vicious vocal alongside a vocal hook, break speed drums and a rhythm section that drives the entire record.
Trials are definitely onto a winner here and even though I have a pre-release download press copy of In the Shadow of Swords I will be making sure I pick up a hard copy come May 1st. 8.2/10
