True talk of their Videos EP, the Swiss Music Scene & Witney Houston!?!

Comprised of two classically trained jazz musicians, Switzerland’s TRUE are clearly a talented duo. With the their debut EP, ‘Videos’, out 3rd March via Mouthwatering Records, the pair have melded together beautiful pop melodies with deeply emotive lyrics. Tom Claydon spoke to the band to find out more.

Hi TRUE, thanks for taking the time out for this interview. Please can you give an introduction to your band for WG’s readers?

“Hi we are Dani and Rico from Switzerland, together we are TRUE. We try to write great pop songs and then wrap them in an all synthetic, shimmering and shiny costume.”

Congratulations on the brilliant ‘Videos’ EP! How long have you been making music together?

“Thank you! We started making music together about 5 years ago. We stripped it down more and more and in the end it was just the two of us and some lovely electronic devices.“

You say that you wanted your EP was created through ‘musical telepathy’ and free-form improvisation, stemming from your jazz music training. How would you describe this process? Do you feel you’re quite in sync when you’re writing music?

“We just get together to play and then sometimes we talk more than we play, not about music at all. But when we do play it’s quite magic, the songs just happen. Sometimes we don’t even realize it until we listen to the recording of the session and discover practically finished songs.”

Any plans for new material or perhaps a tour?

“Yes, we have new material and we love it. We can’t wait to release it actually. We hope for a tour in autumn. It would be great to play outside Switzerland as well!”

The Swiss music scene is something quite unfamiliar to us in the UK, what’s the scene like in Bern?

“Bern is a very small city, so all the different scenes are really close and not as separate as in other places, which is great. Compared to its size Bern has an incredible output of great bands and musicians. But sometimes I wish we all were a bit more brave and forward thinking.”

Is there anyone whose music you’re particularly enjoying at the moment or anyone you feel has inspired or influenced your own music?

“At the moment we like listening to FKA Twigs and Cashmere Cat. Our own music is probably most inspired by Prince and Whitney Houston, we have to admit that.”

7. Any final words? Opportunity for a plug here!

We are putting out a video soon and there will be a second EP later this year. We hope you stay tuned on our website and facebook. Thank you for the nice interview!
