“A BAND TO FALL IN LOVE WITH” – THE GUARDIAN
Julie and Suse – AKA Glasgow’s finest DIY scuzz-pop duo Tuff Love – kick-start 2015 with their most insistent single to date. ‘That’s Right’ is two minutes and 23 seconds of blistering power-chord perfection, with the distortion pedal cranked all the way up, and the band’s signature swoon-inducing harmonies floating over the top. The song is a soaring adrenalin shot themed around instructions on a box of pain killers. Like it’s accompanying VHS-flavoured video, which is premiering now via The Quietus, the song was crafted within the confines of Suse’s flat.
Following the success of their previous single, ‘Slammer’ – which made the BBC 6 Music B-list – ‘That’s Right’ is yet another shining example of Tuff Love’s innate knack for self-produced pop. Both songs feature on the band’s forthcoming Dross EP, which will be released on 10” pink vinyl (w/ download code) on February 9, 2015 via Scotland’s leading DIY label, Lost Map Records. The band are leaving the bedroom, and heading out on the road with a clutch of live shows over the next month (see below for details).
Tuff Love are Julie Eisenstein (guitar, vocals) and Suse Bear (bass, vocals), two close-knit pals living in Glasgow, Scotland – creators of the kind of hyper-infectious, fuzzed-up, lo-fi pop music that the city is so famous for. Writing together in Suse’s bedroom, and recording everything by themselves, their musical partnership has produced a flurry of addictive, perfectly formed songs, tied together by heart-wrenching harmonies, direct-as-sin lyrics and sun-soaked dreamy melodies. Following the release of their debut Junk EPin May 2014 – on dazzling 10” white vinyl via Lost Map – the band toured the UK and Europe, and played several major summer festivals, including Glastonbury, T in the Park, Wickerman, Coconut Festival (France), Lost Map’s Howlin’ Fling,Cloudspotting and Long Division. They have built up a sturdy live reputation, playing for sell-out crowds opening for Real Estate, Perfect Pussy, Joanna Gruesome,Honeyblood and PAWS.
As well as enjoying heavy radio rotation – they’ve been championed by the likes ofLauren Laverne, Steve Lamacq, Rob Da Bank, Huw Stephens, Gideon Coe, Vic Galloway and Nemone among many others – Tuff Love were filmed in session for BBC Introducing, and also performed as part of the BBC Academy series. The press have been equally smitten: Tuff Love have been the subject of two features with The Guardian, a two-page interview in DIVA and profiles in NME, Metro, The Sun and The Daily Record among other national publications, while the Junk EP received glowing praise across the board both online and in print.
