Tune-Yards shares dizzying mixed-media video for ‘Honesty’
TUNE-YARDS
COLLABORATE WITH CREATIVE GROWTH’S SUSAN JANOW ON DIZZYING MIXED-MEDIA VIDEO FOR ‘HONESTY’
FESTIVAL APPEARANCES AT SASQUATCH, LATITUTE, FUJI ROCK, ROSKILDE & MORE
15 TOUR DATES WITH DAVID BYRNE
For their music video for ‘Honesty’, Tune-Yards collaborated with Creative Growth, an organisation dedicated to providing a professional studio environment for artists with developmental, mental and physical disabilities. Written and directed by Susan Janow, the animated mixed-media video stars Merrill as a ‘60s housewife finding freedom through an absurd journey from grocery store to tropical giant-food paradise. Susan Janow and other Creative Growth artists created everything from the dizzying backdrops to the costumes. Janow’s work has been shown in prominent collections and museums worldwide. Creative Growth is based in the vibrant creative hotbed of Oakland, CA, just blocks away from Tune-Yards’ studio.
Tune-Yards bandleader Merrill Garbus says, “Susan’s concept for the video played artfully against the lyrics of the song – I loved her idea of a bored, sheltered housewife having an ecstatic psychedelic experience involving weird jello food and lots of pizza. The topics of this album are heavy and light at the same time, and I’m so glad to have a video that brings out its joyful Dada side.”

I can feel you creep into my private life, Tune-Yards’ fourth studio album, was released earlier this year to high praise. A fully collaborative effort between Garbus and Nate Brenner who co-wrote and co-produced the record, Garbus’ lyrics explore her place in the world, ruminating on race, politics, intersectional feminism and the environment.
