Formed in 2011 in Sweden, Twilight Force are a power metal band with a strong Stratovarius and Rhapsody influence. Lyrically, they take on a fantasy theme.
Their debut, ‘Tales Of Ancient Prophecies’, appeared in 2014 and the band toured Europe with a number of bands.
Signing to Nuclear Blast early in 2016, ‘Heroes Of Mighty Magic’ is Twilight Force’s second album and sounds polished and blistering from the outset.
Opening with ‘Battle Of Arcane Might’, there’s an element of the filmscore melodic operatic metal akin to Luca Turilli’s Rhapsody, and the big vocal harmonies of Freedom Call.
There’s plenty of interplay between the guitars and orchestration, changes of mood and pace. While the intro to ‘Flight Of The Sapphire Dragon’ is a little too whimsical, it builds, it flies, it soars. There are some great melodies throughout, some fantastic guitar work.
But. Yes there’s a big But. It is rather derivative of the likes of Freedom Call and Rhapsody, and some moments don’t sound very serious. Notably the final track, the finale of ‘Knights Of Twilights Might’ is just so grandiose that it could almost be Monty Python.
Lovely though the highlights are, they need to move on from their influences and add a serious stamp of their own. 6.4/10
