venbee returns with “stars (john’s local)”, a hazy, half-cut song that sees The Streets-esque narrative nostalgia mixed with MGMT-tinted synths. On the song, fictional mate John’s local has morphed into the biggest rave in town, his mum is slow-dancing with a man who is almost certainly not John’s dad, and venbee standing in someone’s sick deciding the only sensible response is to get more drunk. It’s a stream-of-consciousness snapshot of a messy night that spirals fast and never quite explains itself. Watch the accompanying video directed by Dante Richardson
Speaking about the single, venbee says: “This song is my imagination coming to life. The idea was a mate’s local pub turning out to be the world’s biggest rave, and I got to paint the whole made-up night as it unfolded. Me and Evan had the best time writing it.”
Alongside the new single, venbee has announced details of her new EP, back to the drawing board, out 4th September. The forthcoming EP symbolises a creative reset: it retains the venbee energy but is now rooted in more ordinary experiences rather than heightened emotional confession. By removing herself from the centre of her songs, venbee’s music has a newfound expansiveness. The EP will feature “encore, encore” alongside the viral hit about one’s card being declined, “not my day,” which generated more than 7 million TikTok views ahead of release. The track caught the attention of Lewis Capaldi, who is namechecked in the song and responded with a viral TikTok of his own.
“stars (john’s local)” is just the latest proof that venbee is writing with exactly the relatability and honesty that Gen Z’s want right now.
