The Voluntary Butler Scheme – ‘Quinzhee’ (Out today on Split Records)

The first single taken off ‘A Million Ways To Make Gold’ album is ‘Quinzhee’, a Beach Boys-esque seasonal track by The Voluntary Butler Scheme, aka one man band Rob Jones, wrote the song on a hot August night when sleep was evading him. On first play, insomnia. appears to have a sliver lining when it comes to writing a end of year fizzle.

As Rob himself explains, “I whispered it all in to my phone and then worked out the chords the next morning. I played it and thought ‘oh that sounds like Christmassy kind of August accident”. The song features French horn, trumpet, saxophone, guitar, bass, drums, piano and rudimentary violin all played by Rob, no mean feat.

In the cut and pelvic thrust of the season, me thinks, some questionable kind of conspiracy by the lazy TV media, ‘Quinzhee’ may not receive the kudos this quality tinsel single deserves, the single release even boasts an animated video! Works with us, time for your good selves to decide. 8/10
