WALL To Release ‘Shoestring’, EP
Released 1st April 2013 via Big Picnic
WALL will release her EP ‘Shoestring’ worldwide on 1st April 2013, through Big Picnic. The EP follows up her hugely successful debut single ‘Magazine’, which was released in September 2o12.
Last year saw London-based producer, writer and vocalist WALL release her debut single ‘Magazine’ along side a cover of Karen Dalton’s ‘Something On Your Mind’, to overwhelming critical acclaim. The tracks won her admiration from tastemaker press like Pitchfork, Q, NME, i-D, Noisey and Wonderland, while drawing comparisons to Lykke Li, XX and Goldfrapp. The support continued at radio where Radio1, XFM and 6 Music all championed the single.
Taking inspiration from artists such as St Vincent and Patti Smith, WALL takes her lead from women with a strong sense of identity, using her unique formula of layered production as an integral part of the writing process. Favouring rudimentary recording equipment over state-of-the-art studios, she captures not only the intended notes but also encapsulates the room’s natural ambience.
While the production creates an intriguing backdrop, it is WALL’s sense of melody and turn of phrase that takes centre stage. Subtle nods to classic refrains, mingled with her own inflection, suggest a writer who draws from many different eras, resulting in a sound that is both timeless yet modern.
Shoestring continues to demonstrate and display WALL’s production prowess and aptitude at crafting harmoniously refined songs. Her sparse and eerie dreamscape compositions perfectly compliment her soft, compelling vocals. The EP offers us more of an insight into the masterful songwriting of this extremely talented musician, producer and singer, confirming her status as one of the UK’s hottest prospects for 2013.
Having spent the best part of last year mesmerising crowds across the UK ,touring with the likes of Saint Savour, WALL is set to continue this in 2013. Her first live show of the year is a special, sold out, headline show at London’s Hoxton Hall, which will see her showcasing the EP live for the first time. In March, she will head out on a European tour in support of Local Natives, before travelling to out to the US to play a string of dates in March, stopping off in Los Angeles, SXSW and New York. WALL’s US tour was made possible by PRS’s Music Industry Talent Development Fund.
