Benny Mails has announced plans for second single ‘Sticky’, which is available today. This follows the success of debut track ‘I Blocked My Dealer’, which saw the South London rapper tour with the likes of Loyle Carner, Jay Prince, and Lil Peep, with plays across 1Xtra, NTS and Radio 1. Recently in-session with Colors Berlin (where he played another new song, ‘Mantra’), Benny has confirmed a handful of early festival appearances, including Pitchfork Avant Garde and Visions Festival.
‘Sticky’, writes Benny, is “about being young and as happy as can be until you grow up and start being drowned in materialism…you lose your appreciation for the real, free things in life.” ‘Sticky’ is also a wry shot at, he says, “those brands or companies who use ‘free shit’ as bribery. I’ve nothing against gifting things but feel the gesture of scratching backs has taken a toll on culture. I stick to being selective and not rejective.”
‘Sticky’ is a characteristically-frank second offering from Benny Mails, a South-London-based artist of restless creativity. Brought up in the midst of London’s grime scene whilst also listening to heroes like Nas on the one hand and the discovery of his family’s funk and jazz records on the other, his early experiences of playing live weren’t that of a typical MC: Benny breakdanced and performed contemporary dance from a young age with the likes of b-boy legend Crazy Legs and the Zulu Nation. Developing an innate sense for rhythm and flow inevitably filtered into his songwriting, which began in earnest this year with the intense, immersive introduction ‘I Blocked My Dealer’. Having since collaborated with the likes of Gotts Street Park, ‘Sticky’ confirms Benny Mails as a face to watch through 2017.
