Weezer – Say It Ain’t So (Geffen Records)

it has to be said, but I don’t like the debut album by Weezer. But this single changed my perception a bit – all the tracks are unreleased in this format whilst also being thoroughly enjoyable. ‘Say It Ain’t So’ was remixed and produced by Rik Ocasek, but is there really any difference between the two mixes? There is, if not in content or structure, but in the feel, the remix is more laid back and not so drowned in fuzzed guitars, which put me, if not others off the album.

The lighter arrangements work and do the band a big favour. Also supplied as persuasive are two acoustic acoustic versions of widely available former tracks; ‘No One Else’ now stripped right down, allows you to better hear some great lyrics and another great little number in ‘Jamie’.

With harmonies and slightly more urgency this single leaves you with a smile. Even if vocalist/guitarist Rivers Cuomo was beating the pain barrier touring Europe after an operation to lengthen one leg, he has already heighted his and Weezer’s status in this critics mind.  7.8/10
