‘I Prefer The Early Stuff’ is the first single from the ’Profit And loss’ album, out in October on Freakscene Records. It follows on from the band’s self-released “The Winter Olympics” EPs: which spawned a freak radio hit in Slovakia, saw 6 Music support and a song cover-mounted on The Word Magazine, and can count band-favourites Art Brut as official fans. That said, it cannot be easy to sell punk dance. Before you wander off, there is no need for any misgivings.
Like a lot of Winter Olympics’ songs,’Early Stuff’ is about girls and bands. It sees the band recalling the sweet clumsy fumbling of a new act or relationship – those breathless first few weeks of joyful noise and passion where anything seems possible and nothing else matters. Before I get carried away – the roll call, The Winter Olympics are: Martin Bowman (guitars), Andrew Wagstaff (singing), Simon Oldham (drums), Neil Mackay(bass) and Agatha Mlynarczyk (keys). Pippa Wragg Smith sometimes sings backing vocals.
The Winter Olympics are not first, second generation nor 1994, but they have guitars and attitude, it’s accessible with uptempo vocal delivery over frenetic guitars match the drums barrage, you easily get this is alternative fair. What helps convince is that you will find yourself agreeing with the chorus, “I Prefer The early Stuff’” is not an uncommon phrase at any point in music; could see this song popping up all over, and impressing most if not all. Expect to hear a lot more from this band, no bad thing. 8/10
The band launch I Prefer The Early Stuff with a COMPLETELY FREE show at The Wheelbarrow in Camden on Wednesday 30 May. Support comes from Muncie Girls and Art Brut DJs.
