The debut album offering from London based Winter Olympics ‘Profit& Loss’ is out on 1st October and really this is one of the must haves of the years. They have previously also released their debut EP ‘Winter Olympics’ as well as the other two ‘debut’ EP’s with the adventurous names ‘Winter Olympics II’ and ‘Winter Olympics III’. Getting the picture yet? They are Neil MacKey on bass, Agatha Mlynarczyk on keyboards, Simon Oldham on drums, Andrew Wagstaff on vocals, Martin Bowman on guitar, and Pippa Wragg Smith occasionally joins in for a sing along. The band formed when Andrew, who was previously a music writer, was having a moan about what a proper band should be to his good friend Martin and hey presto several beers later Winter Olympics was born! Well not quite that quickly but you get the idea.
They are a superb blend of punk, rock ’n’ roll, pop, dance fusion mental noise and just really really good. Bands of this calibre don’t come along very often but when they do it makes the waiting so very worth it. Blazing instruments and great vocals make this probably the best punk rock ’n’roll pop dance fusion album I’ve ever heard. There is also a very heartfelt appeal from the band on their website as, sadly, a mad superfan has kidnapped Andrew and most disturbingly has posted a chilling video online if you see him please do let the band know where he is, they’ve already lost their deposit at the studio…9/10
