Off the back of their huge homecoming show at Finsbury Park show at the start of this month and following latest track ‘Gospel Oak’, Wolf Alice are pleased to share their cover of The Roches’ ‘Hammond Song’ featuring vocals from Julia Cumming (Sunflower Bean) and Bria Salmena. The release follows Julia’s eponymous debut solo album released in spring this year.
Inspired by the three-sister dynamic in the original band, Ellie, Julia and Bria recorded their version of the song in LA during The Clearing sessions. The band had always loved the track and had plans on sharing it with the world one day. Originally written by Maggie Roche, ‘Hammond Song’ was inspired by the trio’s experiences in the music industry in the early 70’s having left a budding musical career in New York to spend 6 months in Hammond, Louisiana supporting one of the sisters’ quest for love – a time they all ultimately regretted. The experience provided the foundation for one of the band’s most enduring and beloved songs.
On the song, Ellie said “We love this song by The Roches, the guitar work and the vocal treatment, we actually referenced in Blue Weekend but it stuck around as something that inspired us for The Clearing too. Recording in LA, where both Bria and Julia were living, it just seemed like a really fun thing to do to learn those harmonies and sing them with 2 of our favourite singers.”
Wolf Alice played their largest NYC show to date at Pier 17 this Wednesday, July 29th, where Julia and Bria joined them to perform Hammond Song. This is the 2nd track to be released from the bands forthcoming 7” package of B Sides from the recording sessions of their 2025 number 1 album. The Clearing: B Sides is out August 21st, the 1 year release anniversary.
The release of their fourth studio album The Clearing in August 2025 cemented their place in global music culture. An album bursting with ambition, ideas and emotion, it was received with huge critical acclaim, reached Number 1 on the UK album charts and was shortlisted for The coveted Mercury Music Prize for the fourth time – that’s four for four across their 10 year career, making Wolf Alice the only band in Mercury Prize history to achieve a 100% nomination rate across their discography. Wolf Alice also won Group of the Year at the 2026 BRIT Awards as well as being nominated for best Alternative/Rock Act and Mastercard Album of the Year.
