London’s Woman’s Hour have been making waves on both sides of the Atlantic with a stream of transfixing singles championed for their bold minimalist sensibility and instantly memorable melodies. Audiences in the US will get their first chance to see them and hear songs from their forthcoming debut album, due out this year on Secretly Canadian, at this year’s SXSW Festival and shows in New York and Los Angeles, complete dates below.
Woman’s Hour just released a beautiful new video directed by internationally renowned visual artists Adam Brookmberg and Oliver Chanarin for their new single ‘Her Ghost’. Watch and embed the video below.
The new video – a further collaboration between Woman’s Hour and Broomberg and Chanarin following their work together on the band’s ‘To The End’ and ‘Darkest Place’ videos – finds front-woman Fiona Burgess’ lyrics reinterpreted through sign language, offering a striking new vision of universality in the song’s insatiable and heart-wrenching melodies.
“After seeing two young people signing to each other in the street, I became interested in how deaf people communicate, particularly how they engage with music,” says Fiona. “Vilma, the deaf actor in our video, signs the song as a personal response to the lyrics, rather than a literal word-for-word translation. The process has enabled us to celebrate this form of engagement with music; language as a form of dance.”
‘Her Ghost’ is available digitally now on Secretly Canadian.
More on Woman’s Hour’s ‘Her Ghost’
‘Her Ghost’ is Woman’s Hour’s first release with their new label following a year which saw them become the 6th most blogged band of the year (Hype Machine) and receive praise from the likes of Pitchfork, The Fader and Stereogum.
Placing the heart-wrenching vocals of Fiona Burgess against an intricate backdrop of expertly-crafted electronic textures, the new song finds its power through restraint with the band’s attention to the smallest of details reflected in the richness of the end result. At once achingly subtle and breathtakingly powerful in its melodic display, “Her Ghost” is testament to a band fully in command of their unique identity and sound.
Woman’s Hour are Fiona Burgess, William Burgess, Josh Hunnisett and Nicolas Graves.
