New York, NY (May 2, 2023) – Y La Bamba released their new album Lucha on Friday and today share a mini-film to accompany the release – VIEW/SHARE HERE. Produced by Desert Island Studios, the extended video presents three successive tracks on the album and premiered today at Rolling Stone, who spoke at length to YLB principal Luz Elena Mendoza Ramos. Y La Bamba is also elated to announce a fall theatre tour with St. Paul & The Broken Bones as well as a performance at Central Park Summerstage in July. A full list of tour dates can be found below, with more to be added.
Luncha explores multiplicity—love, queerness, Mexican American and Chicanx identity, family, intimacy, yearning, loneliness—and chronicles a period of struggle and growth for Mendoza Ramos as a person and artist. Luz went deep with multiple outlets on their journey and heritage. American Songwriter said, “The record is as lush and complex as its creator.” FLOOD commended, “[Lucha] is a mellifluous, cohesive statement full of euphonic harmonies, serene Latin beats, and a healthy portion of Luz Elena Mendoza Ramos’s sultry voice singing in both English and Spanish, evoking feelings of tranquility and vulnerability.” Them concluded, “Y La Bamba’s resplendent psych folk feels like coming home.”
Y La Bamba recently released “Hues (feat. Devendra Banhart),” a song about not being anyone’s fool. Rhythms veer into bossa nova territory on the track, which is a full-circle collaboration for Mendoza Ramos as they reminisce on the significance of finding Banhart’s work nearly two decades earlier. “He was the first young Spanish-speaking musician that wasn’t playing traditional Mexican music I heard when I was 21. There was nothing like it around that time.”
Daniel Baretto created a Rotoscope video with details of animation that accompanies the track and all proceeds from the single are going to Border Kindness, an organization that provides asylum-seekers, migrants, refugees, and the displaced with comprehensive services that include food, shelter, clothing, medical care, and legal services.
Y La Bamba started their tour last week, performing a SOLD-OUT SHOW in Los Angeles tonight before crossing the country and back, ending in Mexico City on May 25. A Summerstage performance has been added in July in addition to festival appearances at THING and Fairwell. The October theatre run with St. Paul & The Bones is on sale Friday, May 5 at 10 am local time with Seated and VIP pre-sale on Wednesday, May 3 at 10 am local time and local pre-sale on Thursday, May 4 at 10 am local time.
