YANN TIERSEN – WATCH THE VIDEO FOR ERC’H
NEW ALBUM – ‘ALL’ – OUT NOW ON MUTE
US TOUR STARTS THIS MONTH – EUROPEAN TOUR DATES UPDATED FOR AUTUMN
“… the skeletal arrangements of ‘Erc’h’ make its climactic, choral melody genuinely sublime” – UNCUT
“Natural highs quickly arrive in Erc’h’s low drones before Ólavur Jákupsson’s falsettos sweep it skywards – MOJO
“…one of the most gorgeous pieces of music you’ll hear all year, and perhaps for a long time” – DROWNED IN SOUND
Watch the video for YANN TIERSEN’s ‘Erc’h’, featuring vocals from Faroese artist and collaborator, Ólavur Jákupsson
The track, described by Drowned In Sound as “the irresistible centrepiece of the record”, features field recordings Tiersen made on the Breton island of Ushant, Tiersen’s home and the location of his newly built studio, venue and community centre, The Eskal.
He explains, “It rarely snows in Ushant, but in winter 2017, it snowed. A very special day, snow for the first time in 15 years. That night, some birds [the Northern Lapwing] were escaping the cold and they sang all night. It was really strange, I’ve never seen those birds before and they were all over the place, singing.”
ALL incorporates field recordings from Brittany, Devon and, on ‘Tempelhof’, the only urban area recorded for the album, at the Tempelhof airport in Berlin which was decommissioned and has since been reclaimed by nature. Uncut described the track’s “layering growling feedback and field recordings over a poignant piano melody”, watch the video here,
The album examines Tiersen’s renewed interest and deeper connection to his own place within nature. Predominately sung in Breton, the album features several guest vocalists. Anna von Hausswolff is the guest vocalist on ‘Koad’ while Ólavur Jákupsson collaborates on ‘Erc’h’ and Breton singer-songwriters Denez Prigent (‘Gwennilied’), Emilie Tiersen and Gaëlle Kerrien all feature on the album.
